My MIL is as cheap as they come.  I was pregnant, and it was Christmas, so my MIL offered to make outfits for my 3 girls to wear for their Christmas photos.  She made cooking aprons for the girls.  The problem?  They were from a shower curtain - not a clean one, either.  The shower curtain had been used in her house for years.  It had soap scum all over it, and the edges were curled up.  She had cut the pattern with pinking shears, so the edges poked into my girls every time they moved.  The ties were not on correctly, so one was 8 inches higher than the other.  It had dried mildew that was flaking off.  My MIL wanted to have the girls pretend to make cookies wearing this "apron" to send to the relatives.  My girls could not even bend in them, much less cook in them.  And, the 2 year old kept trying to taste the mildew flakes.  MIL was furious.  I would not let them wear them.  I am labeled now as the ungrateful, picky DIL.

Worst gift:  Last month, my ILs went for a trip out of the country.  Ok, let me tell you that I'm a healthy, beautiful size 9.  MIL is always talking about how pretty thin girls are, since my SIL is like a size 3, and all of DH's cousins are really thin.  It's a genetic thing.  Do you know what the woman brought me back as a souvenir??  She brought me a horrible, crappy t-shirt, SIZE XL and there was a discount coupon for the local gym.  TOP THAT!!!!

        ( respond to this story )        ( I can top this )

I have been married to DH for almost 10 years, and I still have not figured out my ILs.  They choose to ignore anything that was unpleasant in the past, and they pretend that it didn't happen.  Know of almost no family history on DH's side, because no one will talk about their parents (mostly MIL).  DH had some very nasty things happen to him when he was very young.  I believe that he needs counseling, so I took a deep breath, and asked MIL about one thing, she said, "That never happened!!!  I know nothing about such horrible things!!!"  End of conversation.  How can people just forget about the past and not care about things that have really hurt their kids?????
