Worst gift:  This one takes the cake.  My MIL/FIL got my SIL's BF of 2 months a complete tool set (hundreds of $$$).  And when my DH opened his present from them, it was 2 popular children's books.  That was it.  Nothing else.  Nice, huh?

Signed - Thanks A Bunch, MIL!

I have an aunt who has nightmare stories about her MIL.  One time, they were going somewhere and the MIL had to go and see about a red dress.  The only place that carried it was a place in another state, where my cousins live (she is their grandma).  So, my poor aunt had to drop everything.  They were stuck in rush hour traffic, and it took them around 10 minutes to find a parking space.  So, the MIL ran and looked at the dress.  She took one good look at it and said, "What was I thinking?"  My poor aunt was about strangle her.

This one is about my mother, not MIL.  When I was pregnant, my XDH and I moved in with her for a little while.  Big Mistake.  She has a drinking problem, and when she's drunk, she will make very mean remarks in the guise of being "helpful".  My ex had a learning disability that he was very sensitive about.  My overly helpful mother told him, one night, while I was asleep, "I really worry about the baby.  What if he comes out stupid, like you?"  At least this is what he told me later.  While XDH was a compulsive liar, this did sound like her typical MO.  Just before my son was born (I had already moved out) I sat down with her.  And, with the excuse that pregnancy gave me the right to be a b!tch, we had a talk.  I told her flat out that I would not put up with any negative comments to, or directed at, my children.  If she insisted on being negative or rude, I wouldn't subject the kids to seeing her.  I don't think she realized how bad she had become, because after that she did make a large effort to change.  Every once in a while she would start to make a comment out of habit, but giving her a look or telling her that it was inappropriate would shut her up fast.  And, the moments became further and further apart.  I now have a more decent relationship with my mother, and the children are close to her.  For those who are scared to stand up to their mothers, it can be hard, but in the long run it may improve your relationship.  Every relationship is better when it has mutual respect and no underlying tension.
