There is a long line of hostility with my MIL and 2 SILs.  For my DH's 29th birthday, I gave him a great party (with food and drinks), and all of his friends, family, and coworkers were invited.  However, his family proceeded to get him so drunk that he was passed out by 11:00, doesn't remember the whole night, and had alcohol poisoning and vomited in his sleep every 15 minutes the whole night.  Our birthdays are 2 weeks apart, and we are the same age.  Our 30th birthdays were approaching when the SILs asked if I was giving my DH a 30th birthday party.  I said NO, not after last year, and that it was my 30th birthday, also, and that someone should give US a party.  Well, during the week of my DH's birthday, they took US out to dinner to celebrate OUR birthdays, and they gave each of us a card.  After dinner, they drove us to a bar for an "after dinner drink", but when we walked in, the bar was full of my DH's friends, and there was a huge banner that hung across the bar that said, HAPPY BIRTHDAY "X".  There was food and beer, and even a band.  It was his family's way of saying, "You'll never be a part of our clan, so get out," which is precisely what I plan to do.  Oh, and this was 4 years ago.  It's just taken me four years to realize that some things will never change.

You think you have it bad??  I have lived with my ILs, their 13 year old son, and their 26 year old DD, who won't leave, for a year and a half.  I have a 2 year old son who listens to 5 different things all the time.  I can't get my beliefs across.  I am a different nationality from them, yet they speak their language in their house.  It is a small house that is made for 3 people, so we are living in a bedroom right outside of the kitchen, where they all live.  I hate it here, and I hate my DH for doing this to me.  I am now 3 1/2 months pregnant, and I am going crazy.  They barge into the room for anything that they want.  These people have no respect for anyone.  I moved here (the northeast) from the south, which is where all of my family is.  But, my DH loves it here, so I decided that I would try.  To save money and get out of debt, DH said that we should live here for a year.  And, we always think that it is just a little longer.  I can't stand it anymore.  I have nowhere to turn, except the phone to talk to MY friends and family back home.  I just wanted to let you all know that it's not that bad if you just have to see them every once in a while.  I have to see them from when I wake up, all the way until I sleep.  My only way away is work, which I also hate.  Good luck to all of you.

Worst gift:  For Christmas last year, my MIL gave me a set of lotion and body soap.  That would not have been bad, but she had told me a month before that a friend of hers gave it to her, and she didn't like it, so she was going to give it to me.  I didn't realize that was going to be my Christmas present.  I also received 3 used and old Christmas tree decorations.  To top it all off, my DH received nice, expensive gifts from her.

RESPONSE:  She Makes It So Obvious She Doesn't Care For Me
Not a big deal.  Expend a similar amount of time and money on her gifts.

RESPONSE:  She Makes It So Obvious She Doesn't Care For Me
Next Christmas, either give her something similar, or tell DH that he is responsible for buying his mom's gift.  Since you already know that she hates the lotion/body soap set, why not re-gift her with it?

RESPONSE:  She Makes It So Obvious She Doesn't Care For Me
Presents shezments.  Why is everyone on this site so freaking worried about what kind of "presents" they get from horrible ILs?  Frig.  If they give you cr@p, then you give them cr@p right back.  Next year, find a used bar of cheap soap, wrap it, and give it to her with a smile.  Why you would allow anyone to get away with (or put up with) passive-aggressive behavior is beyond me.  Grow a spine.

Note:
To better handle the volume of submissions - stories and responses received will be posted as early as our resources will allow.  Responses to new stories will be accumulated, and then posted, all at once, to the original story page at a later date (generally, one set of responses will be posted per day).
