Worst gift:  My MIL gave me a coat rack and she gave my DH 200 Euro.  She did this because while I was in the US for Christmas (I'm married to a European) my MIL went into my house and reorganized all my stuff (not my DH's).  She went after my closets of clothes, shoes, perfume, and even my KITCHEN cabinets!!!!!  Then, she cleaned throughout the house.  There was not much to clean, so all she could do was reorganize and touch things, and unplug computer stuff.  She even broke items, etc.  The reason for the coat rack is because, in the winter, we put our coats on a chair in the corner of our living room (it's her old chair that she gave to my DH before we were married).  When I arrived home, we did our gift exchange with the entire family.  In front of everybody, she brought out the coat rack and looked while I opened the half-@ssed wrap job and then said, "DIL, it's time to give the chair a rest."  There was not a smile on her face (I found out later that she told everybody that I'm not keeping the house clean, and that my stuff is all over the place, and that her son is clean and not used to this).  Then, she asked my DH to come with her to the other side of the room (everybody could still see them) and handed him a card.  He put it in his back pocket.  Later, I asked what it was, and he showed me a check made out to him for 200 euro.  Then, his sister did the same (also in a secret way - but for 150 Euro).  My MIL has hated me from the time that I arrived in Europe - this is just one little thing when compared to the other horrible things that she has done.

When my DH first told his parents of our plans for marriage, FIL's ONLY response was, "Well, I hope her parents are ready to pay for it, since it's the bride's parents' responsibility to pay for a wedding."  He's rich, but only because he's a cheap bastard who only spends money on himself.  I should also mention that MIL was a professional wedding planner.  Not that I wanted or needed her help, but not once did she offer or ask whether she could help.  She even told DH once that she was glad that I was so organized, since she didn't have any interest in helping with THIS wedding.  Of course, when FIL and MIL's OWN DD got married, they not only did NOT go to it, they didn't pay a penny for her wedding, either.  DH and I did NOT get the traditional groom's parents paid rehearsal dinner; I made it at my house, served it myself, and then cleaned up afterwards by myself.  Did they even show for the rehearsal?  Of course not!!!  That would have been being supportive.  They did show for the wedding, however, FIL was drunk during the entire ceremony.  Thank goodness it was an outdoor wedding.  DH had given the groom's men flasks filled with their favorite spirit.  FIL drank all of DH brother's flask before the ceremony.  But, the kicker was at the reception.  As I was sitting with friends eating some cake, I smelled something burning.  I made a joke, "Wouldn't that be funny if it was the marriage license?!"  It turned out that I wasn't joking at all.  It really WAS the marriage license burning up right there in the reception hall.  MIL had said that she wasn't wearing her glasses when she picked up a manilla envelope off the ground and stood it ON END between a camera and a candle.  She "just didn't think" that it would fold over the candle and start to burn.  "I didn't mean to do that.  I'm sooo sorry for that.  Gosh, I HOPE that doesn't mean that your marriage is void and that you're not really married."  As luck would have it, the pastor who did the ceremony was a personal friend of mine and DH and was in attendance at the reception.  He reassured my MIL that, no, the marriage wasn't void since HE could vouch for the fact that the ceremony did in fact happen!  We did go back down to the court house first thing Monday morning, on our way out of town for the honeymoon, with the pastor to explain why the marriage license (all 3 copies) were burnt to a crisp and unrecognizable.  "I've never seen this before in my 35 years here, but, no problem," said the lady, "We'll just issue another license and you can have your witnesses resign them.  Just keep this one away from your MIL!"  Now, nearly 5 years later, I have been told by DH's sister that MIL did in fact intentionally burn the license.  She really did believe that if the license was destroyed, the marriage was null and void.  She was trying everything in her power to make it so that I was not family.  Too bad for her that her plot was foiled.  It's also too bad for her that DH has a backbone and stands up to her when she tries her little games.  It's also too bad for her that she has screwed up so much that she no longer sees us since we moved 1800 miles away, much less gets to see her son or her darling GD, who is 3 years old.  She decided to disown them since we decided that going to DH sister's wedding was important and supported her through it all.  All 3 of us were IN the wedding.  I'll never understand these people, but I certainly do NOT miss them!  Good riddance!  Whose laughing now, MIL?!?!?!

Per the poster's request, no responses collected.

My ILs have 7 GDs and 4 GSs.  One of the GS is an absolute demon spawn from he!!, but she is willing to kill for him and lose her house for him, yet she won't even give her other grandchildren the time of day.  DH and I got married on my step-DD's birthday.  My MIL didn't even give her a card.  We all told her about the party that we were having for her, after the rehearsal dinner.  When everybody was showering my SDD with gifts, MIL just said that nobody told her about the party.  Yet, a month later she bought golden GS $60 worth of toys, for no reason at all.  This child has a little brother, and MIL ignores him just like all the other grandchildren.  Finally, when he is being naughty, which is all the time because he's 4, one of his aunts/uncles has to punish him, my MIL and FIL won't because, "He's our little man."  Whenever I or my BILs or SILs confront her about it, she just says, "Whatever, Whatever, Whatever!"  What is her deal?  I have lots of other stories about my MIL because she is also a psycho b!tch from he!!, but I would be typing all day.

Be thankful that she doesn't want anything to do with your children.  She's nuts!
