MIL is a lazy slob with mental issues that my wonderful DH kept from me until we were planning our wedding.  I will "nutshell" just a few of her horrible acts:  1.  She thought that my aunt's house (3,000 sq. ft on a gorgeous mountain ridge) wouldn't be nice enough for a wedding shower.  When I told her, in no uncertain terms, that my aunt was holding this shower for me, she called my aunt and demanded that a map be created so that people could find her home.  She wanted to insert the map into the invitations.  My aunt told her to go for it, and MIL did.  It looked like a 3rd grader drew it, and she MISSPELLED MY NAME.  2.  A month before my wedding she called my wedding planner and FIRED HER - without telling me or my mother.  She said that she had worked with my wedding planner before, and that she hated her.  So, she begged a cousin of hers to take over the job.  She agreed, but then backed out THE WEEK BEFORE THE WEDDING.  Luckily, a friend saved the day.  3.  In one of her deranged fits she told my DH that we aren't allowed to keep his niece because she might fall down our stairs (pitiful excuse for a control issue).

My MIL got her engagement ring and wedding ring redone in platinum so they could match mine.  She pointed this out to me two days before my wedding, when she and my FIL took me to dinner.  DH and I got engaged in London (where we were living).  Around that time DH went to Mexico with his parents (I was invited, but I would have had to pay my own way, and I was in school in London, so declined).  She told me (at this same dinner, 2 days before the wedding) that she had worn my engagement ring throughout Mexico to keep it safe.  When I asked my DH about this, he was shocked that she would say that.  He told me about the safe that he had used at the hotel.  At the actual wedding my FIL left 2 hours early (because his hip hurt), and my MIL left 20 minutes after him (their hotel was right upstairs from our reception).  My 86 year old GM made it, but not them.  DH is an only child, I think that is where the madness comes from.

My DH's family are not very nice people.  He works in a ski resort where there was a landslide, and a large number of people were killed.  At the time, we received a large number of phone calls from family and friends who were extremely worried about my DH's welfare - with the exception of his own parents and all of his brothers and sisters.  There was no way that they could have not known about it, as there was 24 hour TV coverage on every channel.  How's that for love?
