My MIL was on the phone
with my then DF, as I sat next to him in the car. I could hear
both sides of the conversation. This was the day before our wedding
shower. She proceeded to say, "She is manipulative, pretentious,
and you are making a BIG mistake marrying her." My jaw dropped,
because up until that point I thought that she liked me. DF immediately
hung up on her and said to me, "Did you hear that?" I
said, "Yes," and was in tears. She tried calling back
and he said, "Mom, she heard what you said." I said to
tell her that I am not going to the shower the next day with all
of her friends, and that she was to cancel it. He eventually convinced
me to go. Hours later she called and asked to please speak to me.
This is what her apology was, "I am so sorry. I did not realize
that you could hear what I was saying." I said, "So if
I did not hear it, you would not be apologizing?" She didn't
say a thing. Real nice, huh?

MIL never misses a single
opportunity to extend a helping hand to me when she has an audience.
This irks me a lot. DH doesn't see it, and thinks that she means
well. But, I know that she does it to gather compliments and let
everyone think that she is so good with her DIL, something which
everyone believes, BTW.

I never had problems with my MIL until DH and I got engaged. We
were fixing up our new house when my DH went on a hunting trip.
He gave my FIL a key because he was doing our tile. I came by the
house to check up one evening and my MIL had painted our bathroom
without asking either one of us!!!! She didn't ask if we wanted
that color, or anything! It is still a mess, and I am determined
to fix it sooner or later! Next time she goes on vacation, her
bathroom is getting remodeled. LOL.
