Over the weekend my MIL came up to the apartment with her key to let herself in without even asking us.  To her surprise, we were still home.  She got frazzled and left.  Then she came back a minute later.  I asked her why she was coming into our place when we are not home and without permission.  Her excuse was because her son (only child) asked for some papers, and she wanted to leave them inside.  We have told her in the past not to come into our home when we are not home, or without our permission.  She does what she wants, when she wants, with no regards to what I ask.

Last year my MIL asked my DH to check with me to see if it was ok for her to move in with us until she found a job closer to her home, so she could have a better commute to/from her work.  She then made plans to move her stuff over BEFORE my DH had a chance to even talk to me about it.  She has been living with us for over 14 months, and has no intentions of leaving!  Our business has become hers, as she intervenes ALL THE TIME.  I raised my concerns to my DH, and he basically told me that he is too shy to ask his mother to find another place to live.  Please, can someone tell me the appropriate way to ask an American MIL to bite the dust?

My DH was in Iraq in the months preceding our wedding.  One of my bridal showers was held in a banquet room off a local bowling alley.  They did that game where the bride leaves and everyone has to answer questions about what she is wearing, etc.  When I left the room, I was going to go grab a beer at the bar.  My MIL, in front of all 30 or so guests, spouted off, "Don't let her go to the bar, we'll never see her again."  Keep in mind, I was 22.  I was a graduate student at the time, completing college with honors (and having some fun doing it).  When my DH left for Iraq, I got a night job at a local liquor store and tended to go for a beer or 2 after work with people whom I worked with.  Seriously, we only got out of work with 1 or 2 hours of bar time left, even less before last call, which was 1/2 hour before that.  So there was less than 1.5 hours of drinking time.  We would go and split 2 or 3 pitchers (between 4 or 5 people) and call it quits.  This only happened 2 or 3 times each week.  I was in school during the day and working in the evenings.  I was so embarrassed that she said that in front of all those people (ILs who barely knew me)!!!
