My MIL is an immigrant.  I don't speak her native language.  She insists on speaking her language at every family gathering that I attend with my DH and our children.  She has lived in the US for 35+ years, and speaks English very well.  I sit there, every time, with no idea of what people are talking about.  She goes up to my children and speaks in her language to them, when she knows that they don't understand her.  They are teenagers now, and are respectful to her, but they could not care less if she is around or not.  When we attended a family function with her relatives, who could barely speak English, she turned to me, at one point, and spoke to me in English, no less.  She told me that the one aunt had complimented me on my appearance, but the MIL had corrected her saying, "You should have seen her when she used to be really beautiful."  Yes, she told me this, in English, with pride.  I have been married to her son for 20 years and have 2 wonderful sons with him.  I am . . .

MIL actually did all right with my gifts this year.  I got a shirt that was several sizes too big, and a pillowcase that my 12 year old cousin would love.  So, I'm a fat 12 year old, there are worse things to be.  But, poor DH, he got socks.  I'm not kidding, one single pair of socks with a clearance sticker still on them.  Oh, and a little note saying that the shirt was for him, too, because she knew that he'd like to see me looking nice.  Apparently, I don't usually look nice.  Poor DH.  It's sad when they even treat their own child like cr@p.

( I want my own Frequent Fry Her TM Page )

Before I was married, I had asked my FMIL for the addresses of her side of the family so that I could send out wedding invitations.  It took some time, but she eventually gave them to me.  When the due date for the RSVPs passed and I had not yet received any back from her side of the family, I asked her for their phone numbers (which she was too busy to give me).  The week before the wedding my FFIL showed up at my home.  He had a few too many to drink, and accidentally spilled the beans that my WONDERFUL AND PERFECT MIL gave me the wrong addresses on purpose.  I attempted to contact as many family members as I could.  I was able to receive a few last minute RSVPs.  When the day of the wedding arrived, only my PIL and BIL arrived.  WHY, do you ask?  It was because my PERFECT Monster-In-Law contacted everyone and told them that the wedding was postponed 2 weeks.
