frequent fry her - LondonCalling Frequent Fry Her TM. - LondonCalling/Posted: 20-JAN-08
Worst gift:  The PILs brought my kids a gift back from their recent holiday.  It was three "twigs" that are actually colored pencils.  They look like twigs.  They don't have the uniform shape of a normal pencil, and they don't fit inside a normal pencil sharpener.  If they need sharpening, and they arrived in such a state that they do, then they need to be whittled with a knife.  One is yellow, one is orange, and one is green.

( I want my own Frequent Fry Her TM Page )

My ILs were visiting from out of state.  I had ground turkey meat to make a meatloaf for dinner.  My family loved this meal, and since my MIL never cooks with ground turkey, I wanted to show her how tasty it could be.  We were all in our house, relaxing in the afternoon, when I got a phone call from my mom.  My dad had died.  I burst into tears and ran into the bedroom.  My DH said that I was in no condition to drive, so he took me over there.  When he got back, it was time to make dinner.  MIL asked what I had planned.  DH told her, and they looked for a recipe.  I don't have one, as I have made it several times and know it by heart.  DH said that he would go out and get food.  MIL didn't want her baby to do that (and, also, didn't offer to take them out to eat), so DH asked her if she could make anything using the ground turkey.  She said, "No," and proceeded to tell him how weird it was to cook with the stuff.  She couldn't imagine that anything made with it would turn tasty.  DH was in shock.  My dad had JUST died, and she wanted to put me down!  That is the good part of this - he saw his mom for who she was.  He told her that they loved the meatloaf that I make, and that everyone would be having a can of soup for dinner.  I came home the next day to shower, change, and get my car to take my mom to make arrangements.  MIL hugged me and said. "I can't stay for the funeral.  It would cost too much to change the airline ticket."  Not, "How are you holding up?  Can I do anything for you or your mom?"  Ugh.

Worst gift:  This year I got two plastic storage bins that were literally wrapped in a garbage bag (nice) along with a book on cactus (not that I'm a fan, it was obviously some snide comment.).  This, however, was nothing compared to the guilt trip my DH received.  The plan was that my MIL was going to her new DH's family farm.  She hated that idea, and wanted to be invited to share Christmas with "her son", instead.  So, just before we came over to pick up our presents she fell off the fireplace stoop (literally 1 inch off the floor) and through my DH's present.  She sustained amazing bruises from it.  So, not only did he get a smashed up present, we had to see all the bruises, too.  She didn't get her invite.  Later on, she called to tell us that she was going to DIE!  A blood clot had dislodged from the bruises and was working it's way up to her heart as we speak!  I asked her if her affairs were in order *smile*.
