My MIL can always be relied on to let me know that she does not approve of me not being up to "her standards" in taste.  One evening, DH and I went out for a casual dinner with his parents.  I dressed casually and wore an art glass necklace that featured frosted glass, reminiscent of a more expensive and well known design.  But notably, it was not a true designer necklace.  It is a fine necklace (nothing spectacular, though) and my DH also likes it.  DH and his parents have known that I like art glass.  We arrived and were seated at the restaurant.  The dinner and conversation were going well.  I was hopeful and convinced that it was going to be a successful and positive experience, and we were on our way to a better relationship.  In the middle of the dinner (and, mind you, she was the only one speaking, she had our full attention) she mentioned my necklace, and then said that she thought it was cheap looking!  I thought, *BINGO!* she certainly is reliable!  I held my ground and let her know that she was not going to succeed in her attempt to make me feel inferior!  I respectfully responded to her and said, "Well, it IS made with the art glass that I DO LIKE".

One time, FIL and MIL came to our home to visit and to tell me how my kitchen appliances are "old".  Our house is 2 years old.  What is so old about that?  She continued to go on and on to say that she has all of the latest and greatest kitchen gadgets and appliances, etc.  When we were in the process of saying good-bye, FIL was talking to DH and I was talking with MIL.  She complimented me on a gemstone ring that I was wearing and asked what it was.  I told her what the ring was, and she said it was "nice".  Then, she instantly said, "Well, you know the beautiful royal such and such ring that I have?  That is the same gemstone, you know.  The BIG, BBIIGG, really BIG one with the RICH color and the big heavy blah, blah, blah setting."  FIL and MIL then left out the front door.  As we were saying good-bye, she was still going on about her "better" thing.  She then said, "Give me a call," and said that she would like to hear from me.  She is always telling us to give her a call.  Honestly, I have no desire to!

Worst gift:  DH and I were newly engaged, and this was the first Christmas that I had spent with his side of the family.  All of his sisters and their families were there, many of whom I was meeting for the first time.  I had gotten my MIL a coffee table art book from her favorite artist, so I was feeling pretty good about the pending gift opening.  We gathered in the living room and the youngest children passed out the gifts.  When we all had our gifts in front of us, we took turns each opening one.  I must say that the first gift I opened was rather dull.  I had gotten trouser socks.  This in no way prepared me for what I was about to unleash.  My turn came around again and I opened the pretty box and blindly pulled out, into plain view, a pair of G-string underwear.  It was not the type that reputable companies would ever put on the shelves.  No no, these came speckled with glitter and a heart in the back where the dental floss met to form the "G".  FROM MY FUTURE MIL!  Mortified does not come close to how I felt.  The moment it dawned on me what I was holding up, I quickly tried to stuff it back into the box.  My FMIL began to laugh very loudly, and the children all wanted to see what I had gotten.  I looked to DF for support or guidance.  He had his face down and was staring at his shoes.  His face was a very bright red.  His mother prodded me until I held up the gift for all to see.  In spite of my embarrassment, I did end up joining the family.  But I have firmly requested no more personal care items for gifts!
