On my wedding day I was told by my MIL, "You will have to accept, my dear, that he will never love you as much as he loves me."  And, in the 14 years we've been married, he's proven her right!

FMIL is a real treat.  After her son and I got engaged, we decided to wait a couple of years to have our wedding (we were still in college) so that we could start saving money for it.  We both began juggling jobs with our busy class schedules.  Unfortunately, MIL and FIL are terrible with money and, in spite of the fact that they were making plenty of money, DF had to help with their bills.  He eventually moved off-campus so that his student loans could go to pay for their bills.  At that point, all of his money (and some of mine) went to pay for his living expenses.  Before, he was living in a paid-for dorm.  Fast forward one year.  Our toiled-for wedding account was nearly empty, and the ILs were on better footing.  We were struggling to find ways to pay for ANY wedding, and I had plans for a low-key low-budget event.  The ILs (somewhat manipulatively) offered to pay for the wedding, insisting on a huge, expensive blowout.  In spite of my objections, because of both the high expense and potential strings attached, they and DF insisted that all would be covered.  All seemed well.  One month before the wedding date, the ILs called to inform us that the wedding stuff was not taken care of and that they had only paid the deposit on the expensive venue.  They had no more money.  Briefly panicking, I worked to locate a free chapel where we could get married/elope with only close friends and family - all that we can afford.  MIL had the audacity to call and yell at DF for "wanting to change things all of a sudden".  A strangely bizarre accusation.  After months of her hysterical and controlling behavior, I want nothing more to do with their plans or their money.
