Worst gift: My MIL loves
to shop. Over the years, she has enjoyed lavishing copious and
expensive gifts on her own DDs and her other (now ex-) DIL. At
Christmas, the other "girls" in the family would be asked
for detailed Christmas lists, and she would take them shopping in
December so they could try on clothes and pick out things they would
like. These courtesies were never extended to me. For the 34 years
I've been married to her son, the gifts I've received have included
chipped china, granny panties, used junk, broken clocks, items that
were included as free premiums for some other purchase she had made,
and so on. One year, she didn't give me anything for Christmas,
but the next year I received a calendar for the year that had just
passed. It was obvious that this had been the missing gift from
the previous year. This Christmas, I received a hideous, off-white
acrylic cowl neck sweater, size small (I'm especially well endowed
on top - natural attributes, which her 81 year old DH never fails
to admire), with the sale tag from the discount retailer still attached.
I know that I unintentionally ticked her off this week when I was
trying to compliment her. She related a story about how someone
at the bank and someone at her doctor's office had expressed surprise
that she was 81, because she certainly looked at least 10 years
younger. I said something like, "You have such a great wardrobe,
too," but she took umbrage because I didn't say she looked
71. For the record, she looks like the last surviving Civil War
widow, and doesn't seem to realize that she has gnarly hair sprouting
from her many facial moles, which does serve to distract you from
the mustache. I wanted her approval and affection for so many years
and didn't get it. But, I will say that she has been a great teacher.
Consequently, I have a close and real relationship with my own DIL,
who knows that I am far from perfect. But, she also has no doubt
that I value her and love her very much.

Worst gift: Every year
I try to hint about suitable Christmas presents for my two teenage
children, as they would really appreciate either vouchers or money.
Each year I am sure that the family buys presents through the TV
shopping channels. DS was given a pink plastic mp3 player (said
thanks, whilst playing with his new ipod touch). Two years ago
he was given a desk pen stand with revolving globe of the world.
DH is usually given outdated, stripey jumpers. It is impossible
to know which shop to return them to. I normally receive items
such as plastic jewelry or a plastic handbag. Each year, the whole
family makes a big deal of saying thanks to MIL. When she opens
my presents, she gets the gift receipts, which she can use to easily
exchange unwanted items. I do feel sorry for the kids, who are
really disappointed. I donate the presents to charity after a few
months. I really wish she would stop spending her money. Something
like a tin of biscuits or chocolates would be fine.

She Would Stop
