DH was nearly killed in a car accident when we were first married.  He had to be on workman's compensation for 6 months.  I was a SAHM with our new baby.  He also needed around the clock care.  Needless to say, we were struggling in more ways than one.  We couldn't even afford groceries after paying all the bills.  Finally, DH swallowed his pride and asked my MIL if we could borrow 50 bucks.  We had NEVER borrowed before, and she could easily have afforded it.  SHE SAID, "NO!"  Instead, she cleaned all the expired cans out of her pantry and gave us half a paper grocery bag of garbage.

Since I was the one who fixed DH's papers as a resident, my MIL was very nice to me.  But, now that he has everything he needs, she treats me differently.  However, she does not do it in front of my DH.  She only does it to me and my other SIL.  She goes to church, but is a bad woman.  When I was pregnant, she pushed me.  DH was at work at the time.  DH knows, and it's come to a point where we don't talk to her or my FIL, since FIL agrees with everything she says.  As soon as we are about to leave, she's in the window or goes after us.  The bad thing is that we live in the apartment next door.  I don't want to solve anything, because I've forgiven her too much and I don't want her around my kids.  When DH visits her, she says that I'm crazy.  She's already interfered with one son's marriage, and she says that now it's time for us to get divorced.  DH believes me, and had stopped talking to them as well, but I'm not sure if we're doing the right thing, regardless.  I know she's his mother, but she is evil.  No one visits them or talks to them.  Everyone in the family avoids them.  I just tell her that if she doesn't change her impulsive ways, she and FIL are going to end up alone.
