For much of our marriage,
DH and I lived about a mile from his parents. Too close, but at
least it wasn't next door. MIL had a bad habit of calling us at
noon on Sundays and announcing, "I'm cooking! Come eat!"
I would usually have our own Sunday dinner almost ready to set on
the table, and would tell her that the meal I was cooking was nearly
finished. "Well, you can turn yours off and finish it later,"
she invariably replied. This really burned me up. Did she really
think that I was going to take a half-cooked roast out of the oven
or turn off the burners under the pots and pans on my stove top,
set them aside to get cold, and rush right over to her house to
eat her mediocre food? I would tell her repeatedly that if she
would give us about a day's notice so that we could make plans to
dine with them, we would be happy to visit for Sunday dinner. But,
to expect me to ruin our own food was unacceptable, and just plain
rude! She never got it!

DH's family is neck deep
in debt. They can't even afford a decent wedding ceremony. Unknowingly,
my father paid a handsome dowry and expenses for the ceremony.
MIL started complaining, the second day after our marriage, about
the dowry being inadequate.
