My MIL is nitwit.  Yet, she thinks that she is the smartest thing there is.  A few years ago she called my DH and told him how she had mailed in her check for her personal property tax, but the tax office messed up and marked her taxes as already paid.  They sent her check back without cashing it.  She was going on about how she didn't have to pay her taxes that year, and there was nothing the tax office could do about it, because she had the statement marked paid.  My DH told her that he thought she should go to the office and explain that there had been an error, and her taxes were not paid.  He told her that it may take years, but at some point the state would come back and want their money.  To cover her @ss, she should make sure her taxes were paid.  DH said that she got all snotty and said, "No, I don't have to do anything because I have the statement marked paid."  He told her that she can't produce the canceled check, and the state would ask for proof of payment.  She insisted that they would never do that, and that since she had that bill stamped "paid", that was all she needed.  She would never have to provide additional proof that she paid her taxes.  We never heard whether she went to the tax office to clear that up or not.  She was mad that DH didn't think this situation was as grand as she did, and didn't speak to us for several months.  But, I keep hoping to hear that she's being audited.

When DH and I went on our honeymoon, MIL showed up at the inn where we were staying, only to find that we were out (thankfully!).  So, she went away for a few hours and tried back again later.  Again, she missed us.  But, then, (completely oblivious to the inappropriateness of it all) she told us all about it when we got back home.
