DIL in Hello

The family was trying out MIL's and SFIL's new boat.  It was a beautiful day.  MIL said, "I wonder what the poor people are doing today?"  Tacky, tacky, tacky.  Stupid too, because some of us younger ones are "the poor people", as we get our careers and families established.

MIL has two sons.  MIL prefers the other DIL.  As I was dusting pictures in my hall this week, I glanced at some of the family photos.  One was a professional photo of the other DIL's and BIL's (DH's brother's) wedding.  There was MIL, smack dab in the middle of the photo, wearing white.  It looked like there were two brides!  I can now appreciate my status of least favored DIL!!

My MIL is so cheap.  She will offer to take us out to dinner for helping her around her house or with other chores.  She'll take us to a nice restaurant, but every time we sit down, she will say, "Remember, you have a $5 limit."  What annoys me even more is that she will tell ticket booth clerks that my children are under 12, when they are in their late teens.  Lady, we are trying to set an honesty example for the teenagers!!  DH just laughs.  He says that he flew on her lap as a toddler until he was age 12.

I once worked as a secretary (or, as they say today, admin assistant). I have since been promoted, but MIL will never acknowledge it. In fact, she thinks I am her personal secretary.

MIL called today. Here is how the call went.

ME: Hello
MIL: I'm gonna need some more of my registrations slips. Do you know the ones I'm talking about?
ME: Yes ... (hedging) but I cannot get to them today.
MIL: Tomorrow's fine. I need 200. Bye (click).

I just don't understand why I cannot say no. I can easily say no to people at my workplace. But with family, I always try to be accommodating (read "rug to be tread on").

My mother raised me to be a nice girl, and I want to keep the peace, but jeezzzz. In fairness to her, she does pay me . . .

My DH and I married when I was 18. We were too young to afford a real honeymoon. His mother gave us a week at her timeshare condo. Very nice . . . except for the evening she came to check on and dine with us. Her excuse was that it was the only time she could spend with him, since he was on military leave.
